Gary Le Strange – Norman

FINALLY, after many many years of silence, Gary Le Strange has got his elbows in gear and released a proper single, available now for worldwide download on CD Baby, iTunes and Amazon MP3. It is also available to listen to on Spotify and will soon be appearing on a whole host of other online shops, mobile apps and internet radio stations.

Titled Norman (I’ve Dropped My Cup of Tea), it details the plight of a hapless pop star who has managed to drop his favourite cup of tea, and his increasingly desperate pleas to the listener to help him rescue it from oblivion. With its emphasis on Britishness, beverages, time travel and sado-masochistic roleplay, it is the perfect holiday gift for people called Norman and an obvious contender for the first ever global Christmas Number One.

Samantha Baines

I’m very excited to announce that I’ve taken on Samantha Baines.  A Best Actress Award winner, Samantha is also a talented stand up comedian and was a finalist in this year’s Funny Women Awards. She is also one third of all female sketch group Vinegar who were finalists in the NATYS 2014.  Samantha has had a fantastic year filming ‘Mary’ in major new feature film Girls Night Out for Lionsgate and Ecosse Films, as well as appearing in CBBC comedy Hank Zizper and playing the lead role in Blueprint at the Bike Shed Theatre. She is also currently appearing in a pretty amusing Stand Up to Cancer video alongside Joey Essex. Other TV credits include: Lee Nelsons Well Funny People (BBC) and So Awkward (CBBC). The Jest 4* from The List

This year the Jest team have been pruned from the previous nine piece down to five. It hasn’t taken away from the quality though as this year’s offering is just as tight as last year’s; it’s just resulted in a little more running about for the remaining quintet.

The style is the same, as there’s no reason to change a formula that works so well: intelligent and inventive skits with a deliciously absurdist bent. There are a couple of old sketches – including the errant dancing Granddad and Dame Maggie Smith’s charity appeal – but they are so good they’re well worth enjoying for a second time. The new material is solid too: famous points in history are revealed as the result of misunderstandings, a 1950s’ nuclear holocaust advertising campaign and the dinner party held in a house too close to Heathrow airport delights in pushing the joke beyond the boundaries of the ridiculous.

All five performances are well honed and choreographed – there isn’t a weak link in the chain but special mention goes to Luke Theobald and his uncanny ability to perform the most unlikely impressions of celebrities including the aforementioned Maggie Smith and a truly unhinged Jim Broadbent.

Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, until 24 (not 12), 11pm, £6 – £10 (£6.50 – £9).
